John and Dorothy dropped her mother off at the U.S. Capitol for a military band concert telling her they would pick her up later. They drove about 50 miles to Baltimore, Maryland, and found a clergyman they knew who performed the ceremony. They then returned to Washington and picked up mother. They told her what they had done and asked her to keep it quiet. In those days it was not acceptable to marry while in school.
