Center for Adventist Research Book Prize

The Center for Adventist Research Book Prize honors outstanding scholarship in the history of Adventist faith traditions. It is awarded to the best book on history that prominently features Adventism (usually as the main subject), published within a three-year period. The current award amount is $500.

Nomination Process

Eligibility

  • All works must be nominated to be eligible for the Center for Adventist Research Book Prize. Authors, colleagues, and publishers may nominate works.
  • Entries must be of a scholarly historical nature.
  • Edited and co-authored volumes are eligible; co-authors/editors will split the prize money.
  • Research accuracy, originality, literary merit, and publisher are important factors.
  • Only books bearing a copyright of 2025, 2026, or 2027 are eligible for the 2028 prize.

How to Nominate a Work for Consideration by the Research and Prize Committee

  • To nominate a book for the Center for Adventist Research Book Prize, please email Kevin Burton at burtonk@andrews.edu.
  • One copy of each book entry must be sent to each committee member and clearly labeled, “CAR Book Prize Entry.” Print copies preferred unless otherwise indicated. If only an e-copy is available, please contact the Research and Prize Committee Members beforehand to arrange submission form.

Review Process

  • Nominations will be acknowledged by email by the Director or Associate Director of the Center for Adventist Research.
  • The competition will open on February 15, 2028. Entries must be received by April 30, 2028, to be eligible for the 2028 competition.
  • Books submitted for this competition will not be returned.
  • Recipients will be announced during a ceremony at the triennial meeting of the Association of Seventh-day Adventist Historians and recognized on the Center for Adventist Research’s website and social media.
