Burton: New Staff Member

Since I was born in Texas and raised in Arkansas I consider myself a southern boy through and through. Like my parents before me, I graduated from Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, TX. While they received degrees in education, I chose a different route and finished a Bachelor of Business Administration with an emphasis in management. However, after teaching English as a second language in the Czech Republic for one year, serving as Chaplain at Ozark Adventist Academy for two years, and teaching middle school in South Korea for six months, I realized that God had also called me to be a teacher.

On March 3, 2011, I moved to Berrien Springs, MI, and started my master’s degree at the Seminary on May 9. Thirty days after I arrived in Michigan, I met a beautiful young woman in Sabbath School named Sarah Gane. We fell rapidly in love and became husband and wife on June 3, 2012. We are excited to continue our journey together, which will include my finishing a PhD in American church history—specifically early Adventist history.

Shortly before my wedding, on May 14, 2012, I began working at the Center for Adventist Research (CAR) and joined the digitization team. My primary responsibility was to scan photographs. While it may surprise some, this job actually requires quite a bit of research. Unfortunately, people are not always identified, full names are not always provided, and the building or location where the photograph was taken is often not given. Even when a person’s name is provided it is necessary to figure out his or her full name and year of birth and death so that a subject heading can be created (if one does not already exist). For example, take a look at the “J. Warren Bacheller collection of Adventist Pioneers” on CAR’s website. I spent several days working (especially on the bottom two rows of people) on that one image alone, and a few people still remain unidentified! In addition to this type of research, I have also had the opportunity to work on some special projects here at CAR. I have studied the history of church organization and mission work for the 150th anniversary of the organization of the General Conference, gathered information for a display about Uriah Smith, and researched the history of Battle Creek photographers so that we can more accurately date some of our older pictures.

On September 1, 2014, I began a new job here at CAR. I am now one of the staff members and work as a research/writer for an up-and-coming project known now as the Adventist Digital Library (ADL). This new opportunity allows me to investigate a variety of topics. What I am most excited about is that I will be able to share what I learn with numerous others through the new ADL website which will hopefully launch next summer. I also look forward to sharing the information I discover now with my future students when I enter the classroom once again.

A Passion for Books

I came from Brazil where I worked as a pastor in a southern city. I have always been passionate about books, not only about their content, but also their shape, structure, binding and preservation. For the ancient book artisans, the artistic elements of a book were more than style, they used to represent the very core of the book’s message. With this in mind, my first job was in a book bindery and restoration company. There I learned the different approaches to books with preservation and restoration needs, as well as the different techniques of modern book bindery. This background gave me the way to work and attain my baccalaureate in theology. And today, I am very proud to use this knowledge to approach the historical materials of our church, and attain my PhD degree.

This is exactly the opportunity that my job at CAR gives me, to be a part of history. I work here in the digitization department, which I consider the new, and maybe the last, frontier of the book conservation task. I have also done some preservation tasks, and most recently I had the opportunity to handle Joseph Bates’ Bible. To handle, digitize, and preserve this Bible was an amazing experience for me. I had never thought I would have this book in my hands when I first read about its author. This is like encountering the past and reaffirming my faith. The most wonderful thing of all is that this happens every day here at the Center for Adventist Research.

William E. Baxter, Sr. and William E. Baxter, Jr. Collection (Collection 265)

Scope and Content

William Edgar Baxter, Sr. (Jun 29, 1881 to May 21, 1973) was one of the founders of the Inter-American Division. At the time the division was organized he became Caribbean Union president. Later he filled a similar post in Central America. In 1901 he entered the ministry in the Oklahoma Conference. He was president of the Arkansas Conference from 1913 to 1917. During his 37 years of overseas mission service he served in Jamaica, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. His trek with C. B. Sutton to Mount Roraima in search of the Davis Indians sparked the imagination fo Adventists around the world. (See Review and Herald, Aug 16, 1973).

William Edgar Baxter, Jr. (Jul 25, 1916 to May 28, 2006), the son of W. E. Baxter, Sr., is best remembered as a pioneer missionary pilot. Fluent in Spanish, the son of missionary parents also devoted his life to overseas mission service first in Colombia and Venezuela, and later in Mexico as head of the Theological Department at Montemorelos. For many years he had a dream of being a flying missionary. In 1953, with the financial assistance of private organizations such as The Quiet Hour, Liga, Missions Unlimited, and Amistad, he pioneered flying missionary work in the Huichol regions of Mexico to meet humanitarian needs there.

This collection contains the personal papers of William Edgar Baxter, Sr. and Jr. A large portion of the collection are diaries of both father and son.
